A water softener works through a process known as Iron Exchange, which aims to eliminate sodium magnesium from the water. Once installed and connected to your water’s mainline, the water softener goes straight to work by removing the iron from your water. It also removes resin from the water (if they are present in small amounts).

Use an Iron Filter
If you are not comfortable with the idea of installing a water softener system, an Iron filter is another great way to get rid of brown well easily. The iron filter is great for hard water within the range of 6.5 to 8 pH.
The iron filter works by taking the oxidized ferrous irons and converting them to ferric-iron particles, which can then be flushed to remove the built-up iron particles.
When using an iron filter to get rid of brown well water, you can either use air aspirated filters or carbon filters. The air aspirated filters usually convert ferrous iron into ferric iron by introducing more oxygen to the water. On the other hand, carbon filters are used to eliminate unpleasant odors or chlorine tastes in the water.
Remove the Rust
Rusted pipes are a common reason for brown well water in many households. If during inspection you find that your pipes are rusted, you must replace them immediately. To know which pipes need replacement, simply check the pipes that are bringing out the brown water. Sometimes, the cause of the brown water may not be from the pipe but from a rusted water heater. If this is the case, you must properly clean the water heater or get a new one.
Use the Air Injection Oxidization Method
This filtration method is used for particular filtration purposes. These kinds of water filters are known to treat contaminated waters by introducing oxygen to the water source. This will lead to the oxidization of iron and manganese in the water. Once oxidized, the particles would stick to the media bed, which will regenerate and flush out all impurities. This treatment, however, is best when the discoloration of the water is caused by the presence of iron.
Use Greensand Filters
These kinds of water filters are usually coated with manganese oxide. These chemicals act like injection filters and are used to oxidize iron and manganese, turning them into solids. The solidified particles (impurities) will then stick to the media bed and be washed away. Unlike the air oxidization process, which automatically flushes out the impurities, greens and filters are manually washed and replaced.
This water filtration system is a highly effective method that easily removes most organic materials/impurities from the water. Usually, the reverse osmosis system is installed before the water heater to ensure that only clean water enters the house. They can also be installed at the kitchen sink or any other point in the building.
The reverse osmosis system has different filtration stages. The water will flow until it finally reaches the reverse osmosis membrane. At this stage, all forms of impurities are removed from the water, leaving it clean and ready for use.
